Dental Implants

One of the most notable advancements in the field of dentistry over the last four decades has been the development of dental implants.

Dental implants are permanent, long-term solutions for missing teeth. They are superior to dentures in that they become part of your tooth structure (no need to remove and clean), and, unlike bridges using anchoring crowns, they don’t require removal of any healthy tooth structure.

How do dental implants work?

A post made of titanium or another alloy that is compatible with the human body is surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw. As the healing process takes place, the jaw bone grows into the implant, giving it the necessary strength and stability to support the replacement tooth or teeth.

Replacement teeth are custom-made crowns, bridges or permanent dentures designed to match the shape and color of your surrounding teeth. These are permanently affixed to the implant posts for a long-term, natural-looking result.

Some dental implants can be completed all in one visit. In other cases the dentist will place the implant posts and install a temporary crown or bridge while the permanent replacements are being customized. In a third scenario, osseointegration (the healing of the jaw bone into the implant) must be complete before the replacement teeth are installed.
